According to the Constitution of the State of New Mexico, the Lieutenant Governor serves at President of the New Mexico State Senate. The Legislature convenes each year, alternating between 30-day and 60-day sessions. The Legislature can also be called into Special Session by the Governor or convene in Extraordinary Session with the approval of 3/5 of its members. In each case, Lieutenant Governor John Sanchez serves as President of the Senate and has the constitutional authority to cast a deciding vote when the body is equally divided.
The 51st Legislature began on January 15, 2013.
